Hey everyone! I'm pleased to share the second piece I recorded in LA last month, called "Land of the Snowmen". You guys might be able to tell that I was much more nervous with this piece (I forgot how to conduct), so bear with me. It was such a treat to try new things and explore the styles of music that I enjoy writing with such an unfathomably talented orchestra. I can't thank everyone involved enough for such an incredible few days! ------ In January, I had the immense pleasure of flying out to LA to conduct two of my pieces with the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Eastwood Scoring Stage. The sound they produced was absolutely incredible, and with only 14 minutes to look at the music, they sounded like they'd been practicing for hours already. Hey everyone! In January, I had the immense pleasure of flying out to LA to conduct two of my pieces with the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Eastwood Scoring Stage. The sound they produced was absolutely incredible, and with only 14 minutes to look at the music, they sounded like they'd been practicing for hours already. Genuinely, this was the most exhilarating thing I've ever done in my life, and each minute passed by like lightning. Many thanks again to the wonderful faculty for guiding us through the process of composition, orchestration, and conducting over the course of 6 short days. Welcome back to Friday Music, everyone! I'm pleased to present "Wakami' ". On Monday, the peeps over on my Instagram chose a prompt for me to write music to, and this week the prompt was: "If Guillermo del Toro made a movie about the Mayan Civilization set in present day". I framed this story around an elderly woman recounting her family's ancestral history and the tragedies that plagued the Mayan people. I've always found del Toro's works striking and profound, so I wanted to grab as much rawness as I could and put it into this short "backstory". This week's Friday Music was particularly fun for me because of my Guatemalan heritage. I've collected a few native Mayan instruments over the years, some passed down from my dad. I don't think I've ever explored this side of my history in this way, and I think it was a really rewarding experience. And to those wondering, "Wakami' " means "today" in Kaqchikel, a Mayan dialect. In the story, we follow our protagonist, Tim, after he found himself in his father's lab and accidentally cloned himself. I tried to mix in a good bit of fear, curiosity, and mischievousness, cause personally, I'd be pretty freaked out at 10 to be staring at another me! On Monday, the peeps over on my Instagram chose a prompt for me to write music to, and this week the prompt was "A villain that wants to discover a planet". I had to work fast to get my ideas down and figure out a way to tell a complete story in under 2 minutes. In the story, we follow our protagonist villain as he discovers the way to a hidden planet, all the while the story's "hero" is trying to stop him from escaping and making his way to this planet.
